Apartment Energy Saving Tips

  • Be aware that appliances and devices that use electric heating elements are the most intense users of electricity and should be minimized. These include electric heaters, irons, toasters, toaster ovens, electric skillets, blow dryers with heat settings, curling irons, laser printers, vaporizers, electric blankets, electric kettles, coffee-makers, refrigerator defrost components and electric dryers.
  • The largest energy users in apartments are, in order, refrigerators, air conditioners, and lights.

          * Refrigerator: Defrost your refrigerator's freezer regularly so it can operate more efficiently. Use the right temperature setting for your refrigerator and freezer. Keeping foods colder than necessary costs more and rarely pays off in extended shelf life.

          * Air Conditioner: Only use your air conditioner when the outdoor temperature is above 70 degrees.  Below 70 degrees, it wastes energy, and can damage the air conditioner. Keep shades and blinds closed during the day, especially when not at home, to reduce the effect of the sun's heat. *** Consider placing the thermostat at a slightly warmer setting. Maintaining your apartment a degree or two warmer may have little impact on your comfort but will reduce your cooling costs significantly.

          * Lighting: When you leave a room, be sure to turn off the lights. Flourescent lighting generates less heat than incandescent, which reduces cooling requirements. Keep your lights and fixtures clean, which can improve efficiency as much as 20%.

Snow Angels at Mission

Snow Angels is a seasonal volunteer program sponsored by the City of Mission. If you live in Mission, are elderly or disabled, and cannot shovel your driveway, we may be able to match you with volunteers who can clear your driveway and sidewalks of snow. We rely on volunteers from the community to provide this service.

If you're able-bodied and willing to volunteer to shovel driveways, or if you need assistance shoveling your driveway, please contact Josh Rauch, Neighborhood Services Coordinator, at 913-676-8368 or
jrauch@missionks.org.

Snow Angels also recognizes Mission residents who go the extra mile to look after their neighbors. If your driveway was shoveled by a neighbor, you can contact the City of Mission to nominate them for the "Snow Angel of the Year" award. The award recognizes the top 3 individuals who volunteer to shovel the most driveways in the City of Mission during the first few months of the year.

To nominate your neighbor, please contact Josh Rauch, Neighborhood Services Coordinator, at 913-676-8368 or
jrauch@missionks.org.
